The 8 pillars of a lasting couple

The 8 pillars of a lasting couple

Three dimensions to love, five habits to last. A model inspired by French sexologist Thérèse Hargot, grounded in philosophy and relationship psychology.
What draws us together

The 3 As: mind, body, heart

We love a whole person. Thérèse Hargot describes three ways in, matching three parts of who we are: the brain, the body and the heart. When one is missing, the relationship limps.

Admiration

The brain

Admiring your partner’s intelligence, values and way of being in the world. It’s what keeps conversations going for years, and lets you respect each other even when you disagree.

Attraction

The body

Desire, chemistry, the pleasure of touch. Attraction can’t be forced, but it can be nurtured: attention, sensuality, curiosity about each other’s body.

Affection

The heart

Tenderness, empathy, caring for each other. It’s what remains when desire fluctuates and admiration is put to the test.

What Aristotle and Sternberg already said

The idea that lasting love rests on several dimensions isn’t new. Two classic frameworks shed light on the 3 As.

Aristotle: three kinds of friendship

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle distinguishes friendships of utility, of pleasure and of virtue. The first two fade when the benefit or the pleasure disappears; only the third, based on who the other person is, endures.

Sternberg: the triangle of love

In 1986, psychologist Robert Sternberg described love as a triangle: intimacy, passion and commitment. “Consummate” love brings all three together.

What keeps us going

The 5 Rs

The 3 As explain why we choose each other. The 5 Rs describe what we give each other, day after day, to keep that choice alive.

  • Reassurance

Being a safe base: reliable, consistent in your love, present when your partner has doubts.

  • Respect

Truly listening, honouring boundaries, deciding as equals. Respect is what makes vulnerability possible.

  • Laughter

Humour, play, complicity. Laughter defuses tension and reminds you that you’re on the same team.

  • Dream

Imagining a future together, supporting each other’s ambitions, building a shared horizon.

  • Radiance

Growing through the relationship rather than shrinking in it. A healthy couple expands both people.

What research says

The 5 Rs echo several robust findings in relationship psychology: attachment, observation of stable couples, and self-expansion theory.

The secure base

John Bowlby showed that everyone needs a “secure base”. Hazan and Shaver (1987) found this need persists in adult couples: feeling safe with your partner lets you explore, open up and take risks. This is the foundation of Reassurance and Respect.

The 5:1 ratio

Observing couples in his lab, John Gottman found that stable couples show roughly five positive interactions for every negative one during conflict. Laughing, reassuring, expressing admiration: every small gesture counts toward that ratio.

Five positive moments for every negative one

The Sound Relationship House

Gottman pictures the couple as a seven-storey house held up by two walls: trust and commitment. Several floors echo the 8 pillars directly.

Highlighted: the floors and wall that match the 8 pillars (Admiration, Affection, Laughter, Dream and Reassurance).

Love as self-expansion

Arthur and Elaine Aron describe love as self-expansion: we absorb our partner’s resources, perspectives and qualities into our own identity. A relationship that expands us boosts satisfaction; one that diminishes us erodes it. This is the scientific basis of the Radiance pillar.

Two people, an exchange in both directions Give Receive

Nothing holds without reciprocity

Love is an art you practise, not a feeling that simply happens to you.

For Erich Fromm, active love rests on care, responsibility, respect and knowledge of the other. A pillar only truly exists if it flows both ways: admiring without being valued, reassuring without ever being supported in return, means carrying part of the house alone. That’s why the quiz asks two questions per pillar: what you give, and what you receive.
