Epektasis
Term | Epektasis |
---|---|
Description | Epectasis (from the Greek ?????????, extension or extreme tension) refers, in an erotic context, to death occurring during orgasm, often attributed to a heart attack or ruptured aneurysm under the effect of violent arousal. This rare phenomenon, sometimes mythologized, blends sexual ecstasy with physiological fatality, creating a kind of ultimate end to enjoyment.
The most famous historical example is that of French President Félix Faure, who died in 1899 in the arms of his mistress, Marguerite Steinheil, officially of cerebral congestion. The press of the time and popular culture made him a symbol of epectasy, feeding fantasies of death-by-pleasure. In literature (Dufreigne, Confland) or medical discourse, the term evokes an orgasmic apotheosis where the body succumbs to excess pleasure. Some see it as a metaphor for petit mort (post-orgasm) pushed to the limit, while others see it as a tragic irony of human frailty. |
