Inside Prague's hidden porn industry where adult films are shot in laundromats, bakeries & GARAGES
Voiceover: Welcome to the hidden booming sex industry in Prague, which is fast becoming known as the Silicon Valley of the pornography industry. My name is Thea Jacobs and I'm a feature writer for The Sun. I want to discover why this city is making so much porn.
It's mid-morning in the center of Prague and I'm about to go behind the scenes on a set with a twist.
CZ Muse: Nice to meet you. Here we're adult producers and most of our work is virtual reality. It's the VR goggles that you put on.
Voiceover: Married couples Samantha Ron and CZ Muse have been producing adult films together for seven years now. They're one of the leaders in virtual reality porn.
Samantha Ron: It's very different to your classic porn—normal porn that we normally see—because it is aimed at people that are looking for more of a real connection. We're doing a scene where it's a couple or people that have been together before. They're having breakfast in bed.
The girl gets a little bit playful, tries to feed the guy a little bit of the food, tries to put it like right under the camera where his mouth would be. There you go, teases him with it. He gets a little rowdy, she puts it away, she just runs her hands down. She notices that the whole thing turned him on, and why not use the opportunity?
Voiceover: The hyper-realistic format is shot through an adapted camera with two lenses to generate 3D video. Even the microphones are specially placed inside plastic ears, which mirror how sound enters the ear naturally. The high-tech setup makes shooting VR porn tricky, both for producers and the talent.
Samantha Ron: For the girl, the maximum distance that they can get to the camera is about 10 cm, give or take. And then for the guy, his nose sometimes touches the backside of it. It's very, very close to his face. I would be happiest if I could put the cameras in his eyes.
CZ Muse: Yeah, here in the middle. Okay.
Samantha Ron: I do have preferred people to do the POV part where the camera is in front of you, because they've done it with me for so many years that they know exactly what I want. You have to watch your breathing as a guy, because the last thing you want is a guy right in your ear, you know what I mean? Like right there as well.
He tries to establish as much connection with the camera as possible. The camera is him, and everybody who's going to be looking is going to be looking like he's here. They can't really have that eye contact or any kind of real intimacy in the scene, so this is as robotic as it gets for the guy. I joke with them, and they take it well—I'm like: "You're a penis on a body today, that's it."
When I give you instructions, I will say it out loud and clear. They have the scripts prior to shooting that day, so they get an entire page with what they're supposed to wear, what they're supposed to say, what the makeup is supposed to look like, what they're doing that day, what the style is, their character in the scene.
Then you're going to go into that laying-to-the-side position, and we'll cut because we have to adjust the camera. But do change into that position—it's important to see you change in there before I cut, so the viewer is expecting that change.
There's a lot that goes into it technically before the scene even happens. Once you're in the scene, that's actually the easier part—for me, anyway. Once we're doing this, that's the fun part.
Nobody really did it for us. Some did, but it wasn't a big niche yet, and a lot of people were like, "Yeah, it's never going to work, it's going to be like 3D porn, it's going to be up and down." But when I watched it, I was like, "I don't think so, this is something else." This does offer you a connection with some of your favorite stars.
This is a very sex-positive country. Nudity is not a big deal. The government likes it too because, obviously, we pay taxes just like we should. As long as you pay taxes and do nothing illegal, it's a business like any other.
With people, they usually have a good reaction. You'll get sometimes the weird reaction where they don't really know what to think of it. I think they'll take you like, "Oh, you must be doing all this and that," but that's the thing—we're here working, you know? It's not a dirty, unsafe place like a lot of people might think.
Cut! It went very well. We're going to the last position now and I'm not suspecting any issues so far. She did really good. You're doing very good, thank you.
Voiceover: Today they're shooting in a rented apartment, a common setup for the industry in Prague, where porn is shot quite literally everywhere.
Samantha Ron: Laundromat, bakery... Yeah, we built an entire bakery! Hospital, emergency room, university...
CZ Muse: Oh, we shot at a mechanic garage! Yeah, we did do that. That was a little bit of an odd one.
Samantha Ron: We had a helicopter and a hangar. That was an odd place to do it because everybody was watching. There was just no way to keep thirty old men enjoying their coffee while this beautiful girl is getting... They were cute, you could see all the men in the polo standing there with their coffee, and I was just like: "Oh God, somebody close the door!" My lighting engineer goes: "Then you've got to bring a whole other van full of lights, because I ain't going to light it!"
Beautiful. Okay, now clean up.
We've been doing this for so long that we know most of the girls, but there is such a thing as dos and don'ts. Talk to your scene partner about it. With other clients, we even have a whole paperwork system where we have to do this on video, where she states what's okay with her and what's not. Same goes for the guys.
The testing regime is going to be the standard that it is everywhere else—it's every two weeks. There is not a written rule, it's more of a set rule within the industry, basically. Technically, there could be a production who could be like, "Yeah, it's okay," but it's such a tight group of people that this will come out and you're never going to shoot again if you do that. There's not going to be a model that's going to feel safe to come to your set, there's not going to be an agency that's going to be okay sending a model to your set, and it's not good for you.
Voiceover: They are shooting two scenes today, but before I saw more from the set, I wanted to learn more about Prague's porn stars.
Lita Fate: Hello everybody, my name is Lita Fate. I am 28 years old, and I'm a porn actress and content creator.
The porn industry in Prague is really big. There's a big chance that somebody is shooting porn downstairs right now or at the opposite building. It's everywhere. When you walk down the street, there's a pretty big chance that you walk past someone that is going to shoot maybe right now, or just came from shooting. I think there's a big possibility that you have met a lot of people from the porn industry and you don't even know it.
Voiceover: Lita is Czech, the most searched-for nationality on tube sites. She's been an adult actress for the best part of a decade.
Lita Fate: How I got into the industry? Do you want the longer story or the shorter story?
It all comes back to when I was 18. I went to a strip club for the first time as a visitor. I thought it was just amazing. I was just looking at the girls dancing there and I was like: "Oh my God, they're so gorgeous!" I know it might sound weird, but I thought it was super cool to make money with your body and with your looks, and with just being a woman and embracing it.
Two years later, I moved to Prague. I got a few numbers for agencies here in the Czech Republic and I just texted them. I said: "Hey, I think I might be interested in working with you." They said: "Okay, are you free to go to Brno for a casting tomorrow?" I went, and then on the way back home on the train, she texted me about my first job offer, which was in like two weeks, I think. I said yes, and that was the start of the journey.
In Prague, we usually shoot in apartments or in big villas, but we also shoot in not-so-normal places. My favorite is to shoot outside. I really like it when it's warm outside, I really enjoy shooting then.
For example, I shot at a farm field. They put a big bed in the center of the field, I was in all gold, and the sun was so strong. I shot in a prison—a closed one, of course. I also shot under a bridge where homeless people were watching. I remember we were shooting, and the homeless people were yelling: "Oh yeah, do her good, do her good!" And he was like, "Yeah!" So it was fun for me.
I don't enjoy just the sex part, but the whole process, you know? My favorite role was probably an interviewer because I like to ask questions. But I've done everything from a flight attendant, a nun, a server, a stepsister... I don't know what is normal anymore, because what is normal for me is probably not normal to a normal person who is not included in the industry.
Voiceover: As well as shooting regular scenes, Lita also dabbles in fan sites.
Lita Fate: My fans are the best! On my OnlyFans it's different. I don't watch other girls' OnlyFans, but because I am doing only solo, I have to give them something else. So it's a safe place, not only for me, but for them as well.
Voiceover: Outside of work, Lita likes baking, going to the gym, and spending time at home. In fact, she's a bit shy.
Lita Fate: I get recognized a lot, actually, and usually it's when I would expect it the least. Usually it happens when I go grocery shopping, and they're like: "Oh, you know, when you are finished picking up your veggies, can we take a picture please?" And I'm like: "Oh! Oh, okay." I just sort of forget that I am Lita Fate and I'm a porn actress, you know? I'm just grocery shopping, and I have to be reminded: "Oh yes, yes, of course!"
Voiceover: I was curious to find out how the experience of women in the industry compared to men, so I arranged to meet seasoned Czech porn actor Charlie Dean at his home.
Thea Jacobs: Hi Charlie!
Charlie Dean: Hello, nice to meet you. Come in, please. This is my house, and this is also a production house.
Thea Jacobs: Oh my goodness, so you shoot where you sleep, basically?
Charlie Dean: We shoot where we sleep, yes. Hello, my name is Charlie Dean and I've been a porn star for the past decade.
Thea Jacobs: Would I recognize your living room from anything, or is this just for relaxing away from the camera?
Charlie Dean: Well, you would recognize the living room from every tube site and porn site. How many people have seen my porn videos? I don't know, if you Google me, it says "99,999+" over here.
There is the action. As you can see, it's already quite spotted—you see the white spots and things like that, here and there. So yeah, that's where we shoot, and that's where it gets dirty as well.
The very first people arriving on the set are mostly the girl and then the production itself—makeup artist, lighting guy, camera guy, sound guy, whoever needs to be on the set. Once the makeup is done, she gets dressed and nicely dressed up. First, she needs to basically get approved, so I would say the producer takes his phone, snaps a few pictures of the girl, and sends them directly to the owner of the production. If he agrees, once we get a thumbs up, we can get into the comedy part.
The comedy part is when we are getting into character and starting to play the roles before sex.
Okay, kitchen: as you can see, it's connected to the living room. Kitchen island: most of the action is done up here, or most of the other action is done over here or in here. As you can see, all of the brands—and I mean all of them—I had to cover, because in porn we cannot use brands at all. That's why I take care of everything myself, because if people were to take down this TV for me, they might break something, so I'd rather cover it myself.
Once we're done with the comedy part, we do pictures of the comedy part. Then we get a bit of time to prep ourselves, take a shower, and get ready for the sex itself.
Here we are. We've got stairs to the third floor. Here is the main room. All right, so you can guess—right here is the bed where obviously we do everything. My bed, my house.
Thea Jacobs: If you film a lot of scenes in the bed, do you have to replace your mattress often?
Charlie Dean: Mattress? Not really often. There was really one incident where it leaked through, despite having three covers on it! The very first one is just a sheet, the second one is waterproof so water doesn't go through, and then the third one is just to make it softer. Anyway, it was able to soak through.
This is the second bathroom. I would like you to know that this bathroom is mainly for shooting, okay? As you can see, we've got a huge pool. You can come in if you want to.
Thea Jacobs: Thank you! Yeah, you could fit a few people in this!
Charlie Dean: Sex at work and sex at home are completely different things—that's completely two different worlds. It's really important for me to know where the camera is all the time, because I'm opening the angle for them. I'm giving them everything to see what they should see, and covering what they shouldn't.
This place is really great for girl-girl scenes, because mostly what they use are oils, right? So when you oil up all of your body, you can be here like whatever. But they don't shoot many boy-girl scenes here, because it's quite a tight place to fit a camera guy here, a camera guy there, then some sound man... I need to put some lights from the top as well to light it up, you know? So it's not the perfect spot for shooting boy-girl scenes, but it's a great job, thank you.
Whenever we are having sex, it comes to the part where we are really intimate with each other. Sometimes it creates really good and nice chemistry, and you're having sex for pleasure and the camera is there to just capture it. From my standpoint, if there is no chemistry, I would say that it's work anyway—you've got to do what you've got to do, right? You're hired.
Sometimes you know who your partner is upfront, so you've got to decide if you are okay to shoot with them or not. But once you come on the set, it's quite rude to say, "I don't like this person" or "I don't want to shoot with this person," because if you have any special needs, you should say it upfront to the production.
So, I'm leaving for work tomorrow and you can help me pack. We've got some light jeans, we've got some dark jeans. We don't use dark colors mostly, because it eats our light. I've got some light-colored shoes.
My little helper: similar to Viagra, it works on a different pattern, but the result should be the same. Some people use injections, some people use these kinds of pills. Some people use injections mixing two different kinds. If I'm on the set for 5 hours, I need a bit more help than just my brain. So sometimes it goes for the injections, sometimes it goes for the pills. Sometimes I just see the girl and I'm like, "Okay!"
I really, really love romantic scenes. I'm like a vanilla guy, I'm sorry to say, guys! But you know, these studios which are making hardcore sex scenes, right? They are really intense, and sometimes I feel really horrible for the girls. For me, the best is when we do romantic, slow, nice scenes, and I've got a little fetish with oil, and that's the best for me. That would be the scene of my dreams.
This might be an interesting thing for you. Besides condoms—because we shoot some condom projects as well—we've got the "porn sperm" here. What is porn sperm? Porn sperm is usually artificial sperm which we are using for the video or for the pictures. This artificial sperm is really made to look alike—you can see it's even thick like the real one. It doesn't taste that bad. We are using it mostly for the pictures, or if the girl is coughing, or if somebody breaks something.
If you have a full nose or if she's coughing afterwards, we've got to use something to disinfect, right? This I will put here. Here is also my silicone oil. As you can see, the lube is already in—it was open, so I put the packaging around it so it doesn't leak anywhere.
Thea Jacobs: How come you pack it rather than leaving it for the production to provide?
Charlie Dean: I'd rather be prepared than face the problem on the set and have to come up with a conclusion or solution to the situation which occurred.
Voiceover: Prague attracts talent from all over the world, including the UK.
Johnny Oblong: Hi, I'm Johnny Oblong and I'm a porno actor.
Voiceover: Like many Brits, Johnny's first experience of Prague was on a pal's stag do. He knew then that the city was popular with porn stars, but he didn't know he'd soon end up being one himself.
Johnny Oblong: Well, I guess there have to be certain hubs of activity in any industry, you know? You have Silicon Valley where all the computer guys are, and in Europe, for whatever reason, Prague and Budapest seem to be the central point for shooting. So it is very possible that someone could rent their apartment on, say, Airbnb, and it'd be used for porn.
Voiceover: Johnny only started appearing in front of the camera less than a year ago. Before that, he was an assistant helping to fetch everything from food to sex toys.
Johnny Oblong: And before that, my last job was as a school teacher for seven years. Before I moved to Prague, I was a bouncer, teaching English and physical education at a high school in the UK.
Voiceover: He found himself yearning for more flexibility and the option to travel for work, so he packed it in to pursue a career in porn. Once he had steady work coming in, he felt ready to break the news to his parents.
Johnny Oblong: My mother had more of a pensive look. My father had a slack jaw! Well, I told him and then he said: "I can't believe it! I can't believe my son's an ambassador of the spam javelin!"
I do a lot of scenes where I can improvise or I play a character. I actually like the process of acting. Maybe it's not Oscar-winning acting, but it is acting in some regards, and I quite like doing that when I have a character to play.
There are other English performers, of course, but I'm not sure if I know any who live here, so I think that is an asset in some way. When I drive Fake Taxi, there's a lot of improvisation and talking at the beginning, so I do my best to actually sound more English.
"All right, love? Where can I take you? Hop on in!"
Fake Taxi is a porn concept where a guy is driving a taxi and he picks up a girl, she gets in the back, and some scenario plays out—often along the lines of: "Oh no, I don't have any money, how will I pay?" And then, as you can imagine...
Sometimes people run, and we stop. There was this one funny moment on set: I did a scene where I had to wear a condom at the beginning, and then she takes the condom off. She pulled it off and it went snap, and I continued. Then all I heard was a gasp. I looked over and it was on the cameraman! It hit his camera and then it went onto his leg, and it kind of threw him off, you know? He was shocked, and then she just started laughing, and I started laughing, and we had to do that bit again.
Not everything is making videos. Some of what I do is a live show which is called Vikings of Valhalla. That's me being my Viking here—this is just from last week. My character doesn't have a name per se, but I do dress up. I already look like a very notable Viking in popular culture, so I kind of lean into that look without breaking any copyright.
Voiceover: Johnny has a girlfriend. She's not in the industry herself, but doesn't mind that he is.
Johnny Oblong: She's quite encouraging of what I do. I don't get the impression that it's something that's going to put a stress on us—quite the opposite. She's encouraging, and most days when I'm going to work, she's telling me to go do a good job and go be a star.
Voiceover: In the short time he's been in the industry, Johnny has already got himself at least one pretty avid fan.
Johnny Oblong: I don't do gay porn, but that's not to say I don't cater somewhat to my male fans. I was at home last week and I got a message from some guy who said—not that he wants to see my feet, but he needs to see them! So I sent him some pictures of my feet. Yeah! Hey, I love you back!
Voiceover: Back at the apartment, CZ is starting the preparations for their second scene of the day.
Samantha Ron: The name of this scene is The Joy of the Simple Things, and it is going to feature Lena Cox and Antonio Saints.
CZ Muse: How does it look from the front?
Samantha Ron: The actress is in the kitchen making a cup of coffee when actress two arrives with several shopping bags. She puts them onto the counter, opens the fridge, and starts to put things away. Actress one immediately helps her.
They are the same, they like basic, nice...
CZ Muse: Yeah, I like them. I don't know, maybe purple?
Samantha Ron: Purple! On girl-girl days, we normally bring like ten options.
While they're taking things out, the actress suddenly takes out a... cucumber is what we decided on, or a zucchini! Like a zucchini or something, yeah. A phallic vegetable. I think we all know where that story is leading!
Voiceover: Like every industry, the pornography business has a darker side. Suicides, drug overdoses, and human trafficking form a seedy underbelly which recently has made headlines in both Europe and the United States. But the stars I spoke to all seem to have largely positive experiences. For some, porn appears to be a real passion.
Director: You want to give us a clap?
Mari Gore: I do, yeah. Clap! Okay.
Voiceover: 29-year-old Mari Gore got her start in the industry in 2020.
Mari Gore: In the past, I was a lawyer working in the law industry for years. I finished my studies, of course, and now I'm studying again. I traveled a lot and still do, and I do porn.
I chose Prague and Prague chose me because of the people, because of the vibe which I feel here. It's a safe city for me. A lot of hardcore filming happens here, that's how Prague and the Czech Republic are at the top of the adult industry.
Voiceover: Mari's heavily tattooed body means her mainstream porn work tends to be for productions that want her specific look. That means her shoots for production companies are limited. But despite that, she often gets recognized by men and women.
Mari Gore: They recognize me in the gym, at the airport, in the street, on public transport... Well, some taxi drivers also recognize me.
The men actually ask mostly about how to make a man's penis longer—it's a big thing they want to know! And the second question is whether I'm enjoying it or not.
Which dessert do you recommend? Pistachio and date balls? I guess it's interesting with plum jam and coconut. Let's do the peach here, last one. Yeah!
Sometimes during work you find chemistry, sometimes you find a good smell from a person. When I do boy-girl scenes, I always say to myself: "Oh, now it will be good sex!" I have none for a few days before the scene—I keep the energy, I keep my body, and then, of course, you have a lot of stuff to be crazy. You can try to do it like this, too.
When you do porn, you also find the space in your brain for the wild person, the crazy person, and then you change quickly. Now it's like a challenge for my brain. I say: "Okay, what else didn't you try before? What else, what else, what else?" And you find some other things which are interesting—new kinks, specific stuff, new people. How it is really good for another person, too.
Thea Jacobs: What's your plan when you finish in the adult industry? Will you stay in Prague or will you go somewhere else?
Mari Gore: I've already started searching for a new country. Japan, I love, and I'm dreaming about this country. The UK, I'm also dreaming about it—it's not so far from here. Now I'm studying again for a second degree to become a psychology sex therapist. I guess it makes sense, being in porn, to also have this background and somehow explain to people how to love themselves, how to be freaky, some simple stuff.
Voiceover: She may have the looks, but when I asked what it really takes to make it as an adult star, appearance didn't come into it.
Mari Gore: Truth. Being truthful and finding joy during your work. They came to this world to live, to be with society too, and it doesn't matter what you are doing—keep being human.
